You Don't Know Me
11/3/19
My previous post was a song called "I Don't Know You" by The Marias.
Today I woke up with "You Don't Know Me" by Ben Folds (feat. Regina Spektor) in my head. Is there a correlation between the two? We'll never know.
Still a good song.
Here it is. Sorry about the F-Word.
Love you.

Yes Man
8/12/18
I think this ballad by Ben Folds is best described with his own words from an interview with Billboard Magazine:
"'Why didn't you tell me how I got fat?' is not usually how you start a ballad, so I felt like that disarms the listener and confuses others. I divorce myself from listeners who aren't tolerant of humor."
"I did notice universally that, especially when it comes to weight, people look in the mirror and get the angle just right, tell themselves it's all right, and then they go out. And people say 'Take my picture from this angle or don't take it from that angle,' and at some point, in time you get a perspective on it and you are like 'Holy s--t!' I also like to start with an awkward sentence to open up with because that's how I feel as a person."
If you know me well, you know about my love affair with all things Ben Folds. This song doesn't fall short- it's lovely, maybe one of the more gorgeous songs he's written. I hope you'll take a moment to listen- I think his funny lyrics are always surprising, funny, and more often than not, meaningful. This one starts out with "Why didn't you tell me that I got fat?"
I really like this song and I hope you'll take 4 minutes of your day to listen to it, I think this song showcases not only the man's skill as a songwriter but also arranger.

So There
I'm gonna let the music speak for itself today. Here's "So There" from Ben Folds' 2015 album of the same name. Gorgeous Piece:
Lonely Christmas Eve
The song stuck in my head from today comes from my boyfriend, Ben Folds. It's totally from the soundtrack from the 2000 film "The Grinch" I suppose all the noise from ringing in the New Year is what wedged this one into my head. Holy cow there were tons of fireworks. I'm old.
Here's the song, yo.
Happy New Year, neatos.

Not a Fan
If you're a fan of Ben Folds, you'll love his new song "Not a Fan." If you're not a fan of Ben Folds, let me explain to you why his new song "Not a Fan" is groovy.
The song paints a picture of an evolving relationship. And it does it to a waltz.
The first verse is the relationship as in its infancy. The singer admires his girlfriend because she has exquisite taste, even though he doesn't enjoy the performer that she seems to admire. It bothers him, but he loves her and respects her: "It's part of what makes you beautiful to me."
In the second verse, he doubts himself. His girlfriend and her friends are "so well read" while he grew up on "sugar cereal and tv." He wonders what she's doing with him, when she is so hoity-toity in her tastes.
Then comes the bridge where the singer is starting to get annoyed by the girl's fandom (of course we don't know WHO, if anybody Folds is singing about) and he's starting to see that he's so irritated that the relationship is doomed to fail.
During the third, and final verse, his true annoyance at her admiration for this artist is bringing out his anger. He's annoyed and doesn't want to have anything else to do with it. He's a shallow jerk. "So go get your t-shirt signed, fan girl. I may or may not be here when you return."
The relationship is over and so is the waltz. Who writes a song like this? I love it because it can be the little things that annoy us. It's such an honest telling of a troubled relationship that falls apart over something so silly. I think this sort of thing happens all the time, sadly.
Here's the song, along with a WARNING that there are swear words. In particular at 2:48 and then at the end he drops the BIG ONE at about 3:21. I don't want anyone to be offended. I want this blog to be a HAPPY PLACE FOR EVERYBODY!
If you listened I hope you enjoyed Ben Folds angry waltz.
Have a fun week my friends.

Capable of Anything
Ben Folds is my fellow, as many of you know.
A few weeks ago he released a new album "So There."
It's fantastic. Truly. I apologize in advance for the likely barrage of posts that will follow. I love his music and I find his melodies not only good, but catchy. And since I'm so obsessive compulsive to blog about the exact song stuck in my head on Sunday mornings, I'm certain more are to follow.
So fun facts about Mr. Folds new album:
- He ditched the guitars and opted for a classical sextet called yMusic to join him.
- The album includes 8 chamber pop songs and 3 classical pieces which he recorded with Nashville Symphony
- Lyrically, I think this is the best I've ever heard him.
- Musically, this is very fun and interesting.
The song stuck in my head this morning is the opening track from the album and it's called "Capable of Anything."
I hope you dig. I sure dig.
If you listened to the lyrics, you'll find that the song has to do with a relationship gone wrong where one party is judging and blaming the other for the couple's collapse. The person's response is to throw it back at the accuser saying he/she is capable of causing harm just like anyone else. My favorite lyric is this one:
The thick and holy good guy
I want so bad to be,
But I was weak and wrong,
And when I end it all
It only made you righteous now
You get to blame your life on me
Ben Folds has been married and divorced four times. Who knows why, his business not mine, but sadly the relationships don't seem to work out for him. I think it's done wonders for his music and makes for an interesting story/perspective. Maybe he's happier alone.
As for me, yesterday I found myself on the scariest roller coaster. Normally I don't get scared by this sort of thing, but this ride, Cannibal- at Lagoon in Farmington Utah- is freaky-scary.

The picture doesn't do it justice. That first drop from the top of the tower is 208 feet, which is the highest roller coaster drop in the United States. I want you to think about that for just a moment, 208 feet! The anxiety and anticipation of being lifted (in an elevator) that high and just dropped like that, was perhaps the most frightening thing I've ever done. I really was so scared that I don't know that I'll ever do it again!
Break Up at a Food Court
I'm gonna make this one simple.
Ben Folds was in my head again today.
This song was never properly recorded, I just have a demo recording.
That's right, this is very rare.
The song is called "Break Up at a Food Court"
I love Ben Folds. Even his crappiest songs are great.

Annie Waits
If you're going to be friends with me, associate with me, interact with me or follow my blog, you're going to be exposed to way more Ben Folds than you'd probably wish for. Today I woke up with a great song of his playing in my head, ANNIE WAITS from his 2001 album "Rockin' The Suburbs."
I love this song, I hope you'll listen to it:

We were a group of about 6 or 7 people, all in college- all loud and poorly mannered, but we were having a good time, when this woman, Annie got up from her table and approached us. She had a thick Australian accent and looked as if she had lived a long, hard and interesting life.
Our group of friends was on our way to a housewarming party, by way of this restaurant. One of us had the brilliant idea to invite Annie along and she happily obliged! I remember well, that she hadn't finished her glass of Merlot and somehow convinced her waiter to put the rest of her drink into a styrofoam cup with a lid and we were on our way!
Yes, a sad story indeed, but Annie had found a solution to find peace with this former life.... and the reason she, with all her eccentricities, had decided to come and visit Utah...
I'm not making this story up, this really happened!
As she was explaining all of this to us, in our friend's new house, with our immaturity and energy, we could hardly contain ourselves. She knew we were laughing at her, yet she carried on about all this as if the things she were saying were completely normal. I'm certain that Annie was fully convinced in what she believed.
Before long, my friend had kicked us all out and we took Annie back to the hotel. We were invited to come along with her to the four corners and we tried really hard to go, but we were busy with work and school and unfortunately, this night was the last time we saw Annie.
I love this song, I hope you'll listen to it:
This song is about an elderly woman, Annie who seems to be waiting for someone in her life to come make something interesting happen, whether it's someone she loves or cares about. Folds has many songs where he paints pictures (with lyrics) of characters like Annie and I love the way he tells a story with his catchy tunes. Frankly, I've never understood why Ben Folds isn't all over the radio and television with his music. He's a tremendously gifted songwriter... maybe it's the piano... maybe it's his voice, which isn't as strong as other artists who appeal to the masses, maybe his music is crap? I don't get it, honestly, but for me, he can do little wrong and I love all his songs.
I'm going to share a story with you, only because this song, ANNIE WAITS, makes me think of a woman I met several years ago, who happened to be named Annie and was possibly the most interesting person I've ever met. I hope I don't bore you with too many details, but I was fascinated with Annie and her one-of-a-kind personality and beliefs.
It happened one night when I was in college, eating at a fancy restaurant at The Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City. I was poor and couldn't really afford to be there, but my friend waited tables there and really we were just hanging out. Next to us sat a woman, alone, eating her dinner and sipping wine. She was probably in her late sixties or early seventies and I'll never forget what she was wearing.
White go-go boots:

A straw hat like this:
And a dress kind of like this, but white in color:
We noticed her next to us, and my friend who was waiting tables mentioned that she was extremely strange.
We were a group of about 6 or 7 people, all in college- all loud and poorly mannered, but we were having a good time, when this woman, Annie got up from her table and approached us. She had a thick Australian accent and looked as if she had lived a long, hard and interesting life.
"Excuse me, I'm not from here and I was wondering, what does one do in Salt Lake City to pass time, or have fun?" I don't remember all the details of our first conversation, but I know she explained that she was from Australia and she showed of her go-go boots, which she called "space boots." She wanted to put Velcro to the bottom of the boots, and use them on a spaceship so that she wouldn't float, you know... put Velcro on the ship as well so that you could walk around freely.
We were fascinated with this odd character, and before long, Annie was sitting with us at our table discussing some of her bizarre beliefs that were centered around space and reincarnation.
The host of our part was extremely upset that we brought Annie along. I feel bad about this now, after all, she wasn't invited and she was beyond strange. At the party, she stole the show as she began to tell stories about the former life (she had somehow channeled) when she lived on Saturn with her family.
The story goes that, millions of years ago, Saturn was inhabited by humans. There was a giant war when the planet became dangerous and uninhabitable, she and her family decided to board a space craft and head for earth where they could populate the planet peacefully. But something went wrong! As they were approaching earth their spacecraft crashed and everybody died.
As she had come to learn of this former life as a Saturnian, and this horrible crash that ended that life for her, she discovered that the space craft had crashed right at the point where the four corners meet of present day New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Utah:
She had traveled to Utah, and was planning to rent a helicopter the following day and fly to the four corners "to make a safe landing this time."
!!!!!!!!!!
As she was explaining all of this to us, in our friend's new house, with our immaturity and energy, we could hardly contain ourselves. She knew we were laughing at her, yet she carried on about all this as if the things she were saying were completely normal. I'm certain that Annie was fully convinced in what she believed.
And now that I look back on this night, I'm happy that I met Annie. She was different, unique, uninhibited. Her beliefs were unconventional, and I probably didn't give her the respect she deserved. I feel bad about this. But she was authentic. She was cool. And it makes me wish, that all of us could be a little less uptight, and inhibited. I think if we all let some of our eccentricities come out, that life would be a little more interesting. And really, if you put any of our religious beliefs on paper, they are just as strange and bizarre and Annie's were to us that night.
Jesusland
I'm starting to miss blogging. So I guess I'll try it until I get tired of it again....
I love this song, and it was playing in my head this morning. Just listen to it, it's incredible:

"Jesusland" by Ben Folds
This song is about America. You can interpret it as you please. I love the way the piano rolls on this song with the underlying cello. Whatever you think of the lyrics, I have to believe you are moved in some way by what Ben Folds has to say.
If only one person hears this song without having known it before, I will feel like I've accomplished what I hope with this blog.
Effington
I'll spare you the trouble of me trying to be funny or clever today and just share the song.
This is from Ben Folds. The song is about a city called Effington.
If you're easily offended, you may want to mute from about 25 seconds to 35 seconds. There are no "swear words"- but it's alluded.
I love the energy of the song- and I love how he uses two cities to represent two varying sides to a personality that I'm sure we can all relate to.
