Blogs are so passe and pretentious. Oh well, here's my blog about music that's stuck in my head when I wake up in the mornings along with adventures of the Cash family and wacky wacky crazy wacky shenanigans.

D & W
10/12/2020
I've been revisiting They Might Be Giants' kids music with my son recently, so naturally this song by TMBG would play in my head, right?
This is "D & W" a song which not only anthropormorphises alphabet letters, but gives them complex emotions and depth. I really love the bizarre things TMBG does!
Enjoy
I Hear The Wind
6/8/2020
In 1992, They Might Be Giants released a delightful little album called 'Apollo 18' and on that record they did something unusual: They wrote a delightful little song called FINGERTIPS, which in fact was 21 songs in 1- each lasting about 5 to 30 seconds. I think the idea was to put your compact disc on random shuffle and you'd get a complete song and then 5 seconds of an incomplete song-- that's how it see it at least.
Welp today the 3rd song in the movement "fingertips" by master weirdos TMBG was in my head. It's called "Fingertips 3- I hear the Wind" Here's the complete sequence:

It's hard for me to imagine life without TMBG's music. I really, really love this band.
Here's a fun little ditty stuck in my head.
"Too Tall Girl" from TMBG's 2013 album NANOBOTS (so good)

One Dozen Monkeys
9/8/19
I had a really strange dream last night. In it, I was responsible for several monkeys. Maybe 50 or so. They were everywhere and impossible to manage. I don't know how it happened, but in the dream I somehow accidentally shrunk all of the monkeys to about the size of an ant. After they shrunk, they scattered everywhere, all over the floor and I did my best to not step on them. I remember looking on the ground and seeing chaos, as bug-sized monkeys scattered everywhere. How did this happen!?!? I panicked and looked around and realized that I had accidentally stepped on a few. I remember seeing a monkey through a magnifying glass as it agonized over a broken leg that I had caused by stepping on him. I saw a mother monkey weeping over her crushed baby. It was all so vivid.
Who knows why, probably because they saw me as a threat, but a few of the mini-monkeys started to climb up my legs, I could feel it as they used my leg hairs like tree limbs and climbed up, sometimes randomly biting me, or scratching me until they found their way up to my chest. It was an awful feeling and everything felt so real!
I did my best to gather the monkeys and eventually created a jungle-like environment with small bugs and foliage in an empty aquarium. It felt like the best thing I could do for them considering what I had done to the poor little apes. Then I started to think about how amazing it was that I had somehow created a new species and imagined what it would be like to actually set them loose in the wild! Would the mini-monkeys survive in a miniature world?! I'd never know because I woke up!
What a weird dream. One I'll never forget because everything about it was so vivid.
OK, and consequently, I got a song about monkeys by They Might Be Giants stuck in my head that morning.
Here's "One Dozen Monkeys" from TMBG's fantastic kids album "Here come the 123's"

If any of you haven't listened to TMBG's kids albums (they have four!) and you have children, take some time for both yours and your kids benefit to check them out. Here come the ABC's and Here come the 123's are both my favorites.
Thanks for reading my blog. I lubb you.

Sleeping in the Flowers
3/10/19
If I could give the world a gift, it would be They Might Be Giants tied up in a nice pretty bow. It would look something like this:
I don't know guys. That took me way longer than it should have and man, it looks horrible.
I like you though.
Oh and here's the song stuck in my head, from TMBG's 1994 album, "John Henry" The song is called "Sleeping in the Flowers" and I think it's track 3, but I'm too lazy to look it up. TMBG always cheers me up.

The Shadow Government
Hey Pals,
3/25/18- I woke up thinking about the recent Facebook security breach and this random song by They Might Be Giants wandered into my brain. The song is related to Government secrecy and is coincidentally called "The Shadow Government."
Let's pretend you and I are having a conversation about They Might Be Giants and you ask me to share with you some of my favorite songs by the legendary band. Would "The Shadow Government" be one of those songs? Absolutely not! (But it's still pretty OK song I guess)
But this is what's fun about my blog right? I DON'T GET TO DECIDE WHICH SONG TO BLOG ABOUT, MY CRAZY BRAIN DOES!!!
So, mon amie, here's the song stuck in my head, which is from TMBG's 2007 album "The Else"

You're On Fire
It's time for They Might Be Giants.
Dare I say that this is my favorite band of all time? It just might be.
This duo of John Flansburgh and John Linnell have been rocking for over 30 years and they have few songs that sound alike. They are quirky and brilliant- and what's great (for a family man like me) is that their music appeals to both adults and kids alike.
The appeal is the goofy lyrics, catchy melodies and poignancy all rolled up together.
Today's song is called "You're On Fire." The song itself has to do with road rage, or people getting overly upset over things like getting a car towed.
Check out the strange/rad video that goes along with this fantastic song (which is from the opening track on their 2012 album, Nanobots)
I was thinking about doing a top list of my favorite TMBG albums from worst to best until I've just now realized I've never listened to 2 of their studio albums in their entirety. I have some work to do.
Seriously, though- listen to some They Might Be Giants. Whether you're a kid or adult, in my opinion you'll love them.

Put Your Hand Inside the Puppet Head
TWO FOR ONE TUESDAY!
I know you can't get enough of the songs I share on this site. Lucky for you, I'm gonna share 2 that happened today!
I woke up at 4:00 this morning. This is becoming common with my ever shrinking bladder. This is the song that was playing: They Might Be Giants' "Put Your Hand Inside the Puppet Head."
Then when I got up for real, this is the song that was playing:
I had a feeling that it would be a puppet and baseball kind of day today.

High Five
One of the joys of being a parent, is that you get listen to and sing kids songs.
I had said last time that I would get my wife to sing today. She has a masters degree in music and I just can't bring myself to get her to sing today's song:
This is from TMBG's kids album, "Here come the 123's." I watched this with my daughter yesterday, it's actually a lot of fun.
As soon as I feel it works, we will do another live performance. It just wasn't in the cards today. I'm sorry I ruined your memorial day.

Of all the music videos I've yet posted, I think this is easily my favorite:
Is there a nerdier band? No. Is there a band that rocks harder? Yes, of course, but whether you like it or not, these guys rock.
I'm an unapologetic die-hard fan of They Might Be Giants. There is nobody that makes music like this, unique, intelligent, clever. I challenge you to find 2 tracks that sound alike.

I've been able to see them in concert twice. You will find the most diverse group of people at a They Might Be Giants concert:
Punk Rockers
Nerds
Goths
Families
Dungeon and Dragoners
Amish
American Gladiators
Delta Burke
In case you're wondering which of these 8 categories I fit into, it's 7 of the 8 which includes everything except Punk Rockers.
"Don't Let's Start" released in 1986, was the first music video by an independent band to play on MTV. It was a huge deal at the time and it's a great song. The End.
