Fast as you Can

6/29/20

Today is really 8/10/20 maybe one day I'll get caught up.

Here's a goodun, "Fast as you Can" by Fiona Apple from her fantastic 1999 record When The Pawn....

Oh neat and official video.  I've never seen it.  Enjoy.

To Your Love

11/11/18

There's only one Fiona Apple and I will forever be a fan of hers.

A quick, sad story and then I'll share the song stuck in my head.

During the first year of my marriage, in 2006, I managed a Costa Vida Mexican Restaurant with my brother.  It was a fun job, one that I still miss to this day.  There was a girl who would come in frequently on lunch break, come through the line and order her food.  She came regularly, and I remember her because of her striking resemblance to Fiona Apple.  She had the same big eyes, and pouty lips, which I first fell hard for when Ms. Apple exploded on the music scene back in 1996.

I never spoke to the doppleganger as she passed through line, until one day when she looked at me, smiled and handed me a piece of paper with her phone number on it.  I can't say that something like that happened to me frequently in my life, but I was always surprised and beyond flattered when it did.

As a line worker at Costa Vida I would wear gloves, so I suppose Fiona Apple's twin didn't notice that I wore a wedding ring.  So I told her thank you for the note, but took my glove off and showed her that I wore a ring.  I was taken.  The doppleganger turned red and rushed through the line, and I never saw her again.  I suppose I shouldn't have told her that I was married, as to not embarrass her, but the truth is I would have gladly gone out with her, had I not already found the woman of my dreams.

Today's song comes from Apple's second album (from 1999) which has the longest title ever.  "When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks Like a King What He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight and He'll Win the Whole Thing 'fore He Enters the Ring There's No Body to Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might so When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand and Remember That Depth Is the Greatest of Heights and If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where to Land and If You Fall It Won't Matter, Cuz You'll Know That You're Right."

Incidentally this record has, in my opinion, Fiona Apple's best collection of songs.  It's really, really really good.

Today's song is the second track on the record, which is titled "To Your Love"  Nobody does angry piano girl music quite like Fiona Apple.  I love her for it:

Neat.

On the Bound

This sort of song is what happens when you get a rad production team, decent lyrics/songwriting, and an angry chick with a piano.

Here's Fiona Apple's "On the Bound" which is the opening track of her 1999 album "When the Pawn...." (fun fact, this album title is a poem that Apple herself wrote:  When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks like a King What He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight and He'll Win the Whole Thing 'fore He Enters the Ring There's No Body to Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might so When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand and Remember That Depth Is the Greatest of Heights and If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where to Land and If You Fall It Won't Matter, Cuz You'll Know That You're Right.)

I first heard this song when I saw a used disc of the album back in 2001.  I was curious and thought I'd give it a listen.  It only took 3 minutes and I instantly bought the record, which has gotten years of listening by both me and my wife.

Yeah, here's the song y'alls.

Never is a Promise

Fiona Apple tickled them ivories back in 1996 (at the age of 18!) with an incredible album called "Tidal."  Today she weaseled her way into my brain with a beautiful and sad song entitled "Never is a Promise" from that same album.

This song was the 6th single released from the successful album.  Listen carefully to the lyrics and then ask yourself if an 18-year-old is capable of writing this kind of music.  Although Fiona Apple is still making music (I've blogged about some of her newer music here) nothing touches the kind of music she charged out with in 1996.  I don't think she'll ever top it.

I hope your week is the neatest.

Hot Knife (and Xuxa)

TWO FOR ONE TUESDAY!

This is arguably my most embarrassing post yet.  So I'm gonna cheat and give you two songs, hopefully to counter the first.

That being said, today I woke up with a strange song from my childhood.  Does anyone remember Xuxa?  She was a Brazilian model and children's TV show host.  She had a show on television in the early 90's.  I don't remember much about it, but I do remember the annoying theme song.  Here is a clip.

There was something about this show.  I'll admit that I had a crush on her, but it seems like whenever it was on, even though I was rolling my eyes, I couldn't stop watching.  I also remember that there were silly challenges the kids would play.  When some kid won, Xuxa would shout "We have a WEEEENER" with her think Brazilian accent.  It seems like my family always made fun of that.  A special shout out as well to Xuxa's wardrobe.  The 90's were an awful time for fashion indeed.

OK, so that was my morning song, but I did have another song that was playing in my head when I woke up at 3:00 A.M to make pee pee.  It's from Fiona Apple's new album.  Upon my first listen, this album was tough to swallow.  I am a fan of Fiona Apple's music, have been for many years, and so I want to give it a fair shot.  It's very strange musically, and very dark lyrically.  The song I'm posting today is the final track and probably the one I would share with you if I were introducing this album to you.  So, here's HOT KNIFE for you to enjoy.

Don't judge me.

Jonathan

I have more music from Fiona Apple playing this morning.

This song is from her new album which is very dark and has a very long title.  It's called "Jonathan" (the song, not the album)

So, according to my arduous and deep studies (google) Fiona Apple had a relationship with author Jonathan Ames.  Could this song be about him?  Don't know, but I do like how it sounds- especially the intro music, sounding like Jon Briony dissonant circus music.

Tymps (The Sick in the Head Song)

I like today's song.

What on earth is a tymp?  I did a google search and it says something about a blah blah blah something about the upper part of an archway blah blah.  Or is she referring to a tympani?  Who knows, but I enjoy the song anyway.
